The city of Middletown is home to Wesleyan University, a private liberal arts college that originally opened in 1831. The campus of the University is located in the center of the city on a 360-acre site. Over 340 buildings make up the school with a current enrollment of about 2,800 students. Washington Monthly’s most recent ranking of liberal arts colleges placed Wesleyan as number four in the United States; the University had been ranked highest at number two in previous rankings.
Other places of interest in the city include KidCity Children’s Museum, which is an interactive learning museum for children aged one to eight years old. The famous O’Rourke’s Diner is located in the north end of Middletown and has been serving guests great diner food since 1941. In August of 2006, the diner burnt down in a fire, but was rebuilt with support of the community and reopened in February 2008. Oddfellows Playhouse is the only non-profit youth theater group and is located on Washington Street in the city. The playhouse has been creating performances and activities for people aged two to twenty for over 30 years.
